Gone | Ido

I used to have a friend, you know? And I’m not saying “used to” because we grew apart or had a big fight and never spoke again. I say it because one day he was just gone. I still remember that day like it was yesterday, so vivid and clear. I woke up like every other morning; put on some clothes, had breakfast and brushed my teeth. As I was about to leave for school I sent a message to my best friend, like I did every morning since we both got our own cell phones. That time he didn’t reply, which seemed odd because he always did so, but I brushed it off like it was no big deal. Maybe he just overslept, I thought while exiting my house.

As I arrived at school I waited for him, like always, but he didn’t show up. Maybe he had a cold or something and decided to stay at home and recover. That’s what I tried to convince myself of. That he turned off his alarm and continued sleeping without hearing his ringtone. He got the message, of that I’m sure. But he never read it.

When class began that morning I was feeling down; he usually was the one to keep a smile on my face and make the classes bearable. But as I sat there, with the seat next to me completely empty, I felt bored and sad. I missed him, even when it wasn’t the first school day I faced alone. It’s just that the radio silence was unnerving me a lot. I didn’t know it at that time, but thinking about it now makes me believe that somehow I knew that something was wrong with the entire situation.

I didn’t press the matter; I let it be and concentrated on what my teacher was saying. I assured myself by saying that I’ll just call him to his house once I went back to mine. To check on him and update him on what we learned that day in class. Still, when I got home and did as I said, no one answered. His mom should’ve been in his house at that time, but all I heard was the answering machine telling me to leave a message after the beep. I didn’t; I hanged up and picked up my cell phone, trying to call him and his mother yet still getting no answer. All my texts remained unread, and eventually, they didn’t even reach his phone anymore.

By that time I was already getting quite worried, thinking about just dropping by to see what was happening and why they weren’t answering to any of my calls and text messages. But as I was getting ready to leave once again, the phone in the kitchen rang. I sprinted over there and answered before the second ring. It was my best friend’s mom, asking if I saw him at school that day. I told her that I didn’t and that I thought he was at home. I also said that he wasn’t answering his phone. She replied that neither she nor her husband had seen him since he went to his room the previous night. Both of his parents usually leave really early in the morning, so he comes to school alone. It was normal for all of them, so she thought that he had left like always but began to worry when he didn’t reply to her texts nor came back home.

I didn’t know where he went; I still don’t know where he is. He disappeared over the course of that morning and no one knew where he went. The neighbors said that they didn’t see or hear anything suspicious, not even him leaving the apartment complex. That’s weird, if you ask me, especially since the camera recordings apparently didn’t show anything. It was like he just evaporated. But I don’t believe it; I know there’s something someone’s hiding. The neighbors acted really sketchy and they prefer not to talk about it when asked. I know they never really liked my friend’s family, but it’s not reason enough to be an accomplice of a disappearance.

In my opinion, and also my friend’s parents’, someone took him. Somebody did this to him; made him drop off the face of the Earth. Why? I can only hazard a guess, but I think it has to do with his political activism. His whole family was a part of it, rallying against the corrupt government and what not. They are good people; he was a great guy. Young too, he was only seventeen when they took him. And I know they did, deep down. But what can I do about it? I have marched with his family; been to dozens of police stations asking for habeas corpus and all of that. I don’t want to lose hope, and I’ll keep looking for him, but I can’t help the impotence that I feel. We don’t want to give up the search, but what can we do against people like that? People with power, money, and influence that won’t stop at nothing to silence those who speak the truth about them.

My friend is a victim of political terrorism. Why him? Why like that? To send a message; to cause terror among the population and strike fear into anyone willing to stand for themselves against the government. My best friend, a brilliant and kind human being, was taken to never be seen again. Now all that remains is a name on the tongues of those asking for him, and a picture on his parents’ shirts.

I still go to school; it’s been a year since he’s gone, and it feels like an eternity and like it was yesterday when I last saw him. Nobody replaced him next to me; nobody dares. They all know better than to sit on his spot. I go every morning with the same feeling of hope; that everything was a dream and that I’ll enter the classroom only to see him sitting in his usual place next to me. But it’s empty, every day. I still send him texts, even when they never reach his phone. They probably destroyed it with every other piece of evidence. I don’t even want to imagine what were like his last moments of life; because if one thing is true it’s that he’s no longer alive. I just hope that it was quick and painless, that they didn’t keep him for long.

In a democratic government of the twenty-one-century things like this can still happen. And the people who orchestrate it can still get away with it, even when we know that they did it. It’s not that we’re letting them get away with it; it’s just that they have too much power. All we did was give it to them. Well, I didn’t, but one vote amongst the tenths of millions doesn’t do any difference.

What no one can see it’s what’s left; the aftermath. We don’t move on with our lives. It’s not something that time will fix. It’s lost forever, and we can’t even make peace with it because there’s nothing left. There’s no grave we can go to mourn him to. There’s no goodbye note. There’s just emptiness; like a chunk ripped from our hearts. That seat next to me is still vacant, and no matter who sits there it will remain like that. ‘Cause my friend’s not just gone; he isn’t somewhere, he’s nowhere. He disappeared without trail. We’ll never know what happened, and we’ll never see him again. They made sure of that.

Chronicles - Entry No. 13 : Alone | Crónicas - Entrada No. 13 : Solo/a

(Nobody's Home - Avril Lavigne)

It was quiet that night, way too quiet for my liking. There was no sound in the house, only eerie silence. I looked at the screen of my Smartphone, just a black mirror reflecting my wrecked expression and the signs of tiredness on my face. I unlocked it and opened up Whatsapp; stared at all the chats and groups…no new messages. And why would there be any new messages if nobody fucking cares about me? Not one of my so-called friends -save one- just asks from time to time how I’m doing.

I could just die. I could just slit my wrists and be done with it. What difference does it make to keep living this shitty life if it ain’t going to change no matter how hard I try to turn it around? It’s not going to happen. If it didn’t already then it won’t ever, even if I wait the rest of my life to be happy. I’m just going to remain miserable despite opting for not caring at all. If I try to do things the right way, it just comes out all wrong. I always end fucking everything up.

I feel tempted, for real; to just do it and stop worrying about every little fucking thing. I could embrace peace for eternity if I just let go. After all, nobody would miss me anyway. They wouldn’t care; they wouldn’t even visit my grave. I’ll be forgotten as soon as I cease to exist; swallowed by death and oblivion, consumed by darkness and hate. There’s no love. No, true love I never met. I never will, I won’t make it to that day. I’ll die alone, drowning in a pool of my own blood.

The End

______   ______   ______

Rant

I’m tired of it; I’m tired of keeping quiet. I’m going to say everything, and I don’t care if you read it or not because it’s in English, I don’t give a single flying fuck. First of all, I lost one of my oldest, dearest friends because of the guy I kind of dated during summer; the same one that dumped me without giving me a clear reason why. Because of him too, I believe, most of my friends from my school, the group that came to be last year, began to distance themselves from me. They might deny it, say that I’m crazy and paranoid; that I’m seeing things where there’s none. But I don’t fucking care about their opinion or point of view, it doesn’t matter. The only view that matters it’s mine. Another friend of mine stopped responding to my messages; because she was busy studying or another reason I don’t fucking know ‘cause she hasn’t talked to me since the summer. On top of it all, my favorite band is about to break up (if you think this is not a big deal, fuck you; you don’t know shit). So right now my life is looking pretty grim, with almost no real friends and with a family that’s only it by meaning.

Excuse-fucking-me if I seem too selfish and don’t take into consideration the other people’s lives and problems, but I’m sick of putting everyone before myself when none of them do the same. And why should they, right? They don’t fucking care, so why should I? I want to be happy; I want to think that I deserve to be happy, even when everybody else is treating me like I don’t. Because otherwise, I might as well just kill myself. So I’m only going to appreciate those who didn’t cast me aside, the rest can go fuck themselves for all I care. I give them my affection and friendship and this is how they repay me? Screw them; I’m going to concentrate on keeping myself happy. After all, as of now I only find one reason to keep living; one source of happiness, and I’m going to exploit it to no end. I’m done with all of this bullshit; with all of their bullshit. I don’t deserve this; I haven’t done ANYTHING to deserve this. And I’m not going to complain or demand anything because I know that they’ll just take me into account so they won't feel like assholes. So fuck them and fuck all of this. My new friends might turn their backs on me like most of my friends did during my whole life, but right now they’re making me feel happier and more included that my other friends, the ones who came first but don’t seem to give a damn about me anymore.

I’m tired; of feeling lonely, unloved and being unhappy. I’m done. If you’re looking for me, I’m probably thinking about or hanging out with the only person who’s been the nicest to me in my entire life, and not because he felt obliged or had a need to; the one who welcomed me with open arms even when I hardly tried to be a part of his life. I didn’t ask for anything and gave little also, but he offered me so much in comparison. #ElGallagher, you truly deserve my love and attention; you and the other few who still pay me attention and haven’t shunned me.

    Peace out, bitches.

Chronicles - Entry No. 12 : Painless Steel | Crónicas - Entrada No. 12 : Acero indoloro

(Mad World - Gary Jules)

I see ruby lines and silver skies. I feel fire and needles dancing around me, inside me. It’s raining salt and there’s copper incense permeating the air. It’s cold and it’s hot; iron is all I can taste. The lights are too bright and intense; I only can see blurry lines and incongruous shapes. I feel myself fade, turn into a million pieces and melt. My heart beats like crazy, yet I cannot feel it. My senses are overflowing with information I can barely register anymore. Adrift I am in a sea of pain.

All the memories start to spill and spread, like an unending movie inside my head. I can see through them more frowns than smiles; more tears than laughs. They blend, slow and speed up; they make me dizzy and tire me out. The pull becomes too strong to resist, all I want to do is finally go to sleep. And I could, I can, only if I let go of everything. My consciousness begins to wane; my eyes beg me to let darkness embrace me. Still, there’s a tiny little spark that refuses to be extinguished.

As my eyelids fall shut and I take one last breath I realize it’s a mistake. The light burns but yet my pupils try to regain their focus. All the blood that I felt leaving my body was nothing more than an elaborate illusion made in the wake of maddening grief and anger. The knife I hold in my hand is still clean and painless, shining with promises of peace and death. I’m so close yet so far, that little tiny spark clinging still to the last piece of hope my life dares to provide.

The End

______   ______   ______

Chronicles - Entry No. 11 : Misery | Crónicas - Entrada No.1 : Miseria

(Do I Wanna Know? - Artic Monkeys)

I did it. I finally did it. I decide to accept my fate, my destiny, in order to not let the pain destroy me completely. I didn’t want to, but I had to. Otherwise, I wouldn’t survive. It has come to this; to having to embrace the grief and suffering; to let it numb me like a drug. It has come to this; life hasn’t left me with any other options…sans death. I can’t take it any longer, so I might as well thrive in it and let it consume me entirely. This way I’ll use it to empower me and make me stronger.

I had nothing, only you. And as happy as you were making me, you were also hurting me like nothing else. So I had to survive it one way or another; I didn’t want it to end yet. I’m a masochist, I know, but even I have a limit I’m not willing to cross. I was tired; exhausted by all the feeling and thinking about you. It started to become more of a poison than a cure; more of a pain than a pleasure. I wasn’t happy; I was struggling with my own anxiety and depression constantly.

I thought I could handle it, and that it wouldn’t be really that hard. But just when I decide to embrace my misery, you went and made me trip all over my resolution. You talked to me, invited me to hang out. And no matter what I tried to convince myself of, I knew in that very moment that I couldn’t say no. Not to you, not to that. I surrendered the second you said “hi”. It only took a few words to make me fall back into square one, and now I think that it won’t work a second time. I'm way too in love to give you up.

The End

______   ______   ______

No tenía nada, solo a vos.

Me hablaste, me invitaste a pasear.

Chronicles - Entry No. 10 : The Voice | Crónicas - Entrada No. 10 : La voz

(Better Off Death - Sleeping with Sirens)

It quiets sometimes. But other times is unbearably loud, to the point I can’t shut it up even if I try my hardest to do so. No matter what distraction I try to put between us, when it gets bad…is really bad. I hate it and it scares me because I don’t know how much longer I can resist it. It becomes so tempting to just give in, it’s so convincing when it talks to me. It makes sense, and that’s the most terrifying. ‘Cause I see reason when I listen to it. It doesn’t matter what I think, what I know or believe, it’s always right.

I remember that it used to be quieter, and talked less than it does now. It didn’t speak that often either; it was present from time to time only, which made it all the more easy to ignore and forget. But nowadays it has become impossible to pretend I don’t hear it every single day. It sounds like me, but I can’t reconcile it with myself. It feels so foreign yet familiar at the same time. It’s the darkest part of me, that I know for sure. I also know for a fact I didn’t create it myself.

It’s a consequence. And the cause is life. Is everybody that hurt me over the years; everything bad that happened to me. It doesn’t matter if it was something I did or not; something I had control over or not. It all contributes to the black void that sucks in any negative thing in my life, only to feast on it. It’s always hungry, wanting for more. Whatever I do, or don’t, I end up feeding it against my will. There’s no escaping it, no way to exterminate it. I have to learn to live with it or die trying.

The End

______   ______   ______
