A Russian Night | Una noche rusa

It has been years and I’m still unsure whether it was all a dream or something that actually happened. I can only say for sure that it was so otherworldly that it permanently blurred the line between those two distinctions.

It happened at night, that I remember vividly. The weather was inclemently cold, with blowing winds and falling snow, the last gathering heavily on every surface it reached. I was walking around the neighborhood, delaying my imminent arrival to my house to avoid hearing my parents argue about nonsense.

I was a kid at that time, and I was returning from an afternoon playing with friends in a slope nearby, so I was, of course, carrying my sleigh with me. The first eerie thing I noticed was a trail of footsteps recently left in the snow that went in the same direction I was going, down the middle of the empty street, but they turned the upcoming corner of the block and disappeared behind the building where I lived at the time.

As I came closer to said corner, I could see that the steps led towards a parked car, and only then did I notice that in fact, the footsteps were going in the opposite direction I initially thought they were. That’s one of the few incongruous things that make me think it was only a dream or at least want to think so. Why wouldn’t I notice in the beginning in which direction was the trail actually leading towards?

That question soon lost its meaning once I heard a faint creaking noise apparently coming from the sky at the same time something heavy hitting the soil somewhere made the earth tremble under my feet. For a second there, I thought that it was an earthquake, but there has never been –at least to my knowledge– any earthquakes near the west of Russia. It was only when I looked up that I realized the Earth wasn’t shaking from the inside but was made to do so by something above it.

I’m not entirely sure how to describe it as I don’t remember it clearly, but the best description I can give is that of a giant, black skeleton with orange-colored glowing eyes. It looked human, but it was taller than my five-story apartment complex; it was a moving skeleton, with no flesh, organs or skin, just pure bones. It stood there, looking at me, without making any movements or sounds. I was petrified by sheer terror, trying and failing to rationalize what I was seeing.

I cannot fully convey how terrifying that experience was, or how at that young age I was suddenly overtaken by a sense of looming death that I never even thought about in my entire life until then. I couldn’t even fully comprehend what was going on, but I knew deep in my core that if I stood there any longer I would be no more.

All I can remember after that is running towards the entrance of my building, completely abandoning my sleigh in the middle of the deserted street without ever looking back. I was afraid that if I did so, I would see that monstrous thing again. I went up into the apartment and locked myself in, shutting my window in fear of having its glowing eyes looking inside my bedroom.

I prayed all night, asking any deity that would listen to me to refrain that thing from tearing down the building in search of me. My parents never even realized I had come in since they were too engrossed in their heated argument. I didn’t sleep that night, nor did I the next few, at least not until I practically passed out from exhaustion.

Luckily enough, I never encountered something like that after that one dreadful evening. I never told anyone about it either, until now. It could have been all a dream, or maybe the nightmarish event didn’t repeat itself because I have just refused to walk around the city at night in fear of seeing that black skeleton ever again.

Lonely Road | Camino solitario

I once heard a quote that went like this: “The one who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The one who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever been before”, and it got me thinking for a while.

It started pretty basically, by just pondering about some stuff in my life. But then it got deeper, till the point where I would find myself following that kind of philosophy while doing the most mundane things. In the beginning, it just affected minor choices, like the type of coffee I ordered before going to work, and by the time I realized what I was doing, it had taken over most of my life.

And then I realized how basic I was, how much I let myself be influenced by everyone else. However, I finally understood the more profound meaning behind it after a few months of mulling over the same thought about going against the current. Only then did I make the definite choice to change the course of my life for the better.

I traded most of the typical things about me and what I did for things more unique and interesting. Got a new job, found new hobbies, began reading “odd” books; all concerning my mission to evolve into a greater person. I wanted so much to be there, where no one had been before, just like the quote professed.

Surprisingly enough, it worked! I got a more fulfilling job, I adopted a pet and even found love. I was doing better than ever, but there was still something bothering me about it; something was missing. And that’s when I decided to take it a step further.

The goal was simple enough, I would turn the “lonely path” approach from something figurative more into a literal thing. It consisted of walking physical paths, not just spiritual ones. So, I started taking trips across different places and lands. Forests, mountains, jungles; wherever I could go, I went and followed a new path instead of following the same everyone did.

It was certainly dangerous, and I have to admit that a couple of times I came close to meeting my maker, but the feeling of finding unexplored places was so rewarding that it became addicting. Until I came across something that I wish I have never even found.

I was in the middle of a dense jungle, in a country I dare not name in the hopes that no one else finds what I did when I stumbled upon some unknown ancient ruins. At least I think they haven’t been yet discovered since I tried to do some research about it before burying the subject for good and came up with nothing regarding the topic.

I was really excited at the time, believing I had just uncovered a hidden civilization and that I was going to be famous for it, recognized among scientists and researchers alike or whatever. Little did I know that I was making a big mistake and getting myself into something I knew nothing about.

The things I witnessed inside the decaying buildings, I cannot retell out of fear of inducing mass panic among the population. If someone else finds out about and goes public with it, it could mean the end for all of us. This is an extremely delicate and dangerous matter, not to be taken lightly in the least.

The people there, the ones that remained after what must have been decades in the least, decrepit and decadent as they were...and the things they were worshiping like gods...I cannot say it. Just thinking about it gives me chills.

I will take the secret to my grave and never speak again about that incident. The last thing we need is to give those people a reason to wake their masters sooner than planned. Just know one thing, whoever is reading my journal; they will come, and when they do

Cognitive Dissonance | Disonancia cognitiva

I think core beliefs are a thing for everyone. We all have, in varying levels of importance, something we strongly believe in. Whatever that might be, it’s always part of our motives and strength to keep moving on in this world.

Take for example those who believe in deities, or extraterrestrial life. Or just people that are sure that life has a purpose, or the universe, or just ourselves; that there’s a meaning or a reason behind all existence. Religious people and atheists alike, and everyone in between, we all believe in something.

But what happens when that thing is discredited, disproved or refuted? What do we do when we find that the very same thing we held as a true and core belief turns out to be nothing more than a lie, a false reality? What can we do when our faith loses all foundation?

Well, it depends, I guess. For each person is different, because it’s something so fundamentally personal. Despite being something shared by millions, like believing in a specific god, a belief is intimate and is tied to the person’s being; to their mind, heart, and soul.

Some people take it well; they assimilate the new evidence proving their belief false and they move on with their lives. But some others aren’t that fortunate. A few have their beliefs so integrated into their reality and life that the very disproving of those basically shatters their whole world and leaves it crumbling in pieces.

Whatever it may be, say finding out there is a god or that there’s none, can be so existentially challenging that it’ll make someone go insane, completely incapable of accepting the truth.

I wonder sometimes if something like that could ever happen to me. Like discovering there’s a higher being who created the universe, or that we all actually live in a simulation and aren’t truly alive. Or even something so bizarre as actually being someone else’s creation, as a fictional character. Could you imagine that? If that was the truth, I would surely go insane just from knowing alone.

Call of the Void | Llamada del abismo

Have you ever felt it? “The Call of the Void”. A gripping sensation of imminent doom that settles inside your soul. It’s irrational and frightening, but I guess everyone feels it at least once in their life, out of curiosity.

It’s said that The Call is a particular feeling that takes a hold of oneself when you think about sudden suicide, like considering jumping off a tall building when you are staring down the edge of its rooftop.

It’s only there, in your mind, for a split second and then it’s gone because you would never actually do something like that. You are not suicidal, just intrigued about what it would be like to actually do it, what it would feel like.

There’s no real reason behind it, it’s the “what if” present in the back of your head. Cause you have no reason, but you just can’t help but wonder what would happen if you answered The Call in that split second that you feel it.

It did make me wonder if there had been anyone that had done it, even if as a mistake. Or, in reality, how many people had gone through with it, without wanting to or understanding why, and yet we thought about it as a suicide with a reason behind it, whatever it might have been.

I also wondered if that would have been what my family and my friends would have thought of if I did it. It doesn’t take much after all; a step into nothingness to fall from a building or steering your car into oncoming traffic on the highway.

That’s at least all it took for me, you know? Just one split second of asking myself what if I did it...and then I was answering The Call without even knowing.

¿Alguna vez la has sentido?

There was this one time I took one of those fancy long-distance trains that had a dining car access included in my ticket. I always wanted to be in one of those, after seeing countless movies in which they appear. I thought that it would be a fun experience, but looking back on it, I think it was everything except that.

Remembering it now, it seems more like a dream than something that actually happened. I mean, it was so bizarre to even believe that it was real, but I swear it was! At least I think so…

I don’t recall much of it; you know, kind of like an actual dream, but I still feel in my gut that it did happen. I went there only for breakfast because after witnessing what went on in there I lost my appetite for the rest of the trip. I just didn't want to return there after what I saw.

First of all, I’m not sure if it was just a weird con artist or what, but there was an old man, wearing a suit and a hat (yes, inside the car), that had round sunglasses on and had placed a cane on the side of his table. It was the kind of cane that blind people use; so far nothing strange, right? Just a regular blind man having breakfast...while reading the newspaper. Maybe it was all just an act, or he liked the irony, playing it for laughs, but the whole thing just unsettled me. But that wasn’t all.

Right behind the “blind” man, there was an opening that apparently led to the kitchen behind the counter. It seemed normal, save because there was a red handprint painted in one of the walls. It looked like it was made by someone who was bleeding to death or something. I assured myself that maybe one of the cooks or the waitresses had put their hand on top of a ketchup spill and unknowingly marked the wall on their way to clean themselves, but something told me that wasn’t exactly the case.

To further rile me up, one of the waitresses behind the counter was slicing what looked like a cherry pie or something of that like. Yet from the red color of the stuffing, and the stickiness of the same, it appeared to be nothing of that sort, but rather something that I didn’t even want to venture into thinking about.

I tried to distract myself by focusing my attention on the mother and child near the counter, which were arguing. The little boy wanted to go somewhere, apparently the kitchen, but the mother held tightly onto his arm. With a tentacle. A fucking tentacle.

It was then that I started to disconnect from everything that was around me, not without realizing, at last, the various slim tentacles that were coming out from under the furniture that held the plates and glasses behind the counter.

My mind just couldn’t process all of that; I wasn’t even sure if what I was seeing was real or not. I tried to ignore all of it, arguing that I was just hallucinating or whatever. And so, I pretended that everything was fine and I returned to my steaming coffee.

As soon as I noticed the perfect skull that the foam of my coffee had shaped into, I almost dropped the mug before I ran out of there. I never went back, of course, and I have been avoiding long-distance trains ever since.

I’m not sure of what was all of that, or if it was even real and not a product of whatever had possessed my mind at that time. But just to keep some sanity, I prefer to think that it was all a weird dream that I had that night I slept on the train and not something that I actually experienced while awake the next morning.

Aisle 13 | Pasillo 13

A few years ago, I worked at a big supermarket for a couple of months. I didn’t stay long nor only since it wasn’t my original plan in the first place anyway, but because of something, in particular, that happened to me once.

Something about that specific store always seemed weird to me, even before I started working there and was just another customer. All the aisles were numbered, but for some reason, there was a number missing; the number thirteen. At first, I thought that it was because of a silly superstitious reason like they do in some buildings and airplanes, but a fellow employee told me why after I started working there.

It turns out that there used to be an aisle 13 there, but it got removed after some psycho that tried to rob the place killed a hostage he had taken. Following that event, the personnel decided to remove the number since they thought that it might bring bad luck upon the location, but apparently, that didn’t fix the issues that ensued soon after.

I heard from all my former coworkers that strange things always happened on the aisle where the murder occurred –renamed “aisle 14” after the events took place–, around the exact spot where the victim died. Things like items falling off the shelves for no apparent reason; temperature dropping despite not being any fridges near; or even people slipping on nothing (as if there was still blood spilled on the floor).

I never took them seriously, thinking that it was just some stupid game they were playing to mess with my head or something because I was the new guy and all. But only a few days before I resigned, I understood that there was more than just a joke being passed around.

It happened near the end of my shift, around 7 p.m. I was just cleaning the floors close to the registers when the employees' phone ringed. I picked it up since there was no one else around that was as “free” as I was, with the only girl at the register dealing with a customer.

When I picked up and greeted the person on the other side of the line, asking what the problem was –since they usually used the phone to communicate whatever issue required primordial attention–, all I got as a response was a distorted male voice saying “clean up in aisle 13”. I replied, a little exasperated, that there was no aisle 13 while rolling my eyes and the line went dead.

At first, I thought that it was the manager trying to mess with me (since he’s almost the lone person to use that internal line), like the others seemed to do so often regarding the “haunted” aisle; after all, the only ones that knew about the whole thing were the people working there. I assumed that he was probably referring to the aisle 14 and used its former name just to creep me out. I even thought that they might have been pulling a prank on me and that they could have spilled something on that aisle just to make me clean it.

When I got there, despite my growing annoyance and desire for my shift to be over (which would be in five minutes), I found a spotless floor and no one to be seen. After that I just grabbed my things and went home, not caring about leaving a few minutes earlier since I was pissed off.

The next day, when I arrived, my manager confronted me about my early leave, and I told him that I got mad about his prank the previous evening. He then went to say that he didn’t know anything about that and that he wasn’t even in the store at that time, that he was notified about me leaving by one of my coworkers.

I retold the story from start to finish, and my manager went on to question everyone who was working at the store that night. Needless to say, we never found out who made that call. Either someone was lying, or a customer who knew about the story made a prank call using the phones, even when it’s prohibited for customers to use that line.

In the end, I quit that day, not really wanting to find out who or what made the call. I could live with not knowing, but I couldn't live with doing so.
