Mirror Bed | Cama espejo

My bed used to be against a mirrored wall in an apartment we used to live in. The place was a former dancing studio, so it had mirrors almost everywhere. My mom wanted to put the head of my bed against one of the few bare walls, but I insisted on it being right next to the mirror.

I had this idea about an exciting game I would play every night before falling asleep, in which I would try to catch my reflection at the exact moment I closed my eyes. I was very determined to beat my reflection’s timing and be able to see it, somehow, closing its eyes more slowly than my own, even when they were exactly the same.

There’s no real explanation for why I thought it would be fun, I guess one can simply dismiss it as a young child’s stupid idea. The worst part was that I never saw something wrong about it actually happening. I was just too innocent and naïve, thinking of myself as some kind of scientist or whatever the people that discover awesome stuff were called.

I tried to catch myself falling asleep night after night, and I always failed, until I didn’t. At first, it was always a matter of rehearsal; pretending to fall asleep to fool my reflection, as if it were someone else and not my mere image upon a shiny surface. By the time nearing the night I was successful, I was starting to lose hope. I really feared not ever being able to make it happen. If only I had given up then, I would have saved myself from what I saw.

One night, the last night I attempted it, it worked. I did it just as usual, only this time, when I peered from under my lashes, I saw that my reflection’s eyelids were still completely frozen. In all the time before then, I thought that I would be so happy about being able to pull it off and that I would immediately jump from the bed and go wake up my parents to tell them what I did.

Instead of doing that, I was left frozen in place, barely breathing and with no idea of what to do next. Only when I saw my reflection’s eyes start opening again did I realize the huge mistake I made. As I fiercely shut my own eyes closed again, horror gripping at my throat, I understood that what was happening wasn’t something to get excited about, but the complete opposite.

Only thing I can remember about the rest of the night is the constant feeling of being watched. I didn't dare to move, too scared to turn back on my reflection, fearing what would occur, what it would do to me. The night stretched for longer than I had ever experienced, and I felt on perpetual edge until the sun was up and my mother came into my room to wake me up, deeming it strange that I wasn’t already up by myself.

After that night, I asked my parents to sleep with them until the mirrors in my room were taken down. Luckily for me, we moved out soon after that, so I didn’t have to worry about seeing myself in every room of that apartment.

Still, to this day I cannot glance at myself in any mirror, window or another type of reflecting surfaces, like glass or water. I will never forget what it felt like to have my reflection staring back at me out of its own accord.

Heaven | Cielo

I don’t really know how to begin explaining it; I still have trouble understanding and even believing it myself. It seems to have happened a lifetime ago, and maybe it technically did if it is true at all.

It all started with a car crash I was in a few years back. I was badly injured and rushed to the nearest hospital. From the emergency room, I was sent straight into the operating room for heart surgery, or so I was told when I woke up a couple of days later.

The thing is, although I did come out alive of that accident and healed with no sequels or complications, I apparently died for ten seconds or so while in the middle of the surgery. Like straight flatlined while they were trying to save me.

The weirdest thing, though, is not even that. What a nurse told me before I was released from the hospital –something not even my doctors dared to say in front of me– is that even though they tried to resuscitate me, they were unsuccessful.

At first, I didn’t understand what she meant. It made no sense since I was indeed still alive unless I was actually dead and had woken up in Heaven, or Hell. Only when she further explained what had happened did I get why she was so wary about the whole ordeal. They didn’t bring me back, something else did. She tried to play it off as my heart suddenly managing to start beating again and attempted to end the conversation then, but I pressed her for details until she told me the whole story.

The part about being dead for a few seconds was true, the doctors had already told me that, what they omitted was the thing about me coming back to life, screaming at the top of my lungs like I just realized that I had died. Which of course was impossible.

It was only after she told me the entire story that I started to remember what had happened. But not the things before or after dying, what happened during those ten seconds.

If my memory didn’t fail me at the time, and if what I witnessed was real, I found myself in a dark and cold place. It looked like an infinite expanse of scales of gray. There was mist surrounding me, although I couldn’t tell from where it came since I couldn’t see anything further than five feet around.

It was eerie, and although there was nothing near me, I didn’t feel alone there. And then, out of nowhere, I felt it coming from everywhere. It was all-encompassing and ominous; I can only describe it as what infinity would be like. There was nobody, just a presence, and after a few seconds, a voice.

I was already feeling like hours had passed and like time stretched endlessly in that godforsaken place. The voice only made it worse, making it feel like it went straight through me when it spoke. At first, I couldn’t understand what it was saying, but then I heard it clearly, and what it asked chilled me to the core.

I guess it was that what pulled me back from death. I was so scared from what I had seen and heard that I willed myself out of that hellish place. Still, no matter how much I tried, I couldn’t remember what it said to me. Whatever it was, it frightened me to the point of willing myself back to life.

Since the curiosity was driving me insane, I went back to the hospital a few months after my released and searched for the same nurse who had told me about what happened during my surgery, even though all my instincts were telling me not to do it.

When I managed to find her, she refused to tell me anything more about it, but she conceded after I pleaded with her and said that I was going crazy from the missing parts. She said that a few hours after the surgery was done I woke up again, scared and hysterical. She tried to calm me down and convince me to go back to sleep but I refused fervently.

I hadn’t died in my morphine-induced sleep if that’s what you are wondering, but apparently, I dreamed about what happened in those ten seconds because I was shouting about that place and the voice I heard. According to the nurse, I was repeatedly saying the I had met God and that he spoke to me.

I didn’t want to believe her at first since I was sure that the place I went to was definitely not Heaven but rather Hell. At least until she told me that she had asked me back then what he had said to me, and I replied that he had asked me a single question.

When I heard it from her, it all fell into place; the last piece of the puzzle I spent so much time freaking out about, I finally had it. It was a simple question really, but it had no simple answer, nor a comforting one. I now remember it so clearly, and sometimes I even think that I can hear it from his voice again. Such a little thing that it will haunt me the rest of my life until I finally die for good.

He just wanted to know something from me; from a formerly-alive human. And you might think it ridiculous since he’s –if he really was– God and thus should know everything. Still, he asked me: “So, how was Heaven?

______      ______      ______

A Russian Night | Una noche rusa

It has been years and I’m still unsure whether it was all a dream or something that actually happened. I can only say for sure that it was so otherworldly that it permanently blurred the line between those two distinctions.

It happened at night, that I remember vividly. The weather was inclemently cold, with blowing winds and falling snow, the last gathering heavily on every surface it reached. I was walking around the neighborhood, delaying my imminent arrival to my house to avoid hearing my parents argue about nonsense.

I was a kid at that time, and I was returning from an afternoon playing with friends in a slope nearby, so I was, of course, carrying my sleigh with me. The first eerie thing I noticed was a trail of footsteps recently left in the snow that went in the same direction I was going, down the middle of the empty street, but they turned the upcoming corner of the block and disappeared behind the building where I lived at the time.

As I came closer to said corner, I could see that the steps led towards a parked car, and only then did I notice that in fact, the footsteps were going in the opposite direction I initially thought they were. That’s one of the few incongruous things that make me think it was only a dream or at least want to think so. Why wouldn’t I notice in the beginning in which direction was the trail actually leading towards?

That question soon lost its meaning once I heard a faint creaking noise apparently coming from the sky at the same time something heavy hitting the soil somewhere made the earth tremble under my feet. For a second there, I thought that it was an earthquake, but there has never been –at least to my knowledge– any earthquakes near the west of Russia. It was only when I looked up that I realized the Earth wasn’t shaking from the inside but was made to do so by something above it.

I’m not entirely sure how to describe it as I don’t remember it clearly, but the best description I can give is that of a giant, black skeleton with orange-colored glowing eyes. It looked human, but it was taller than my five-story apartment complex; it was a moving skeleton, with no flesh, organs or skin, just pure bones. It stood there, looking at me, without making any movements or sounds. I was petrified by sheer terror, trying and failing to rationalize what I was seeing.

I cannot fully convey how terrifying that experience was, or how at that young age I was suddenly overtaken by a sense of looming death that I never even thought about in my entire life until then. I couldn’t even fully comprehend what was going on, but I knew deep in my core that if I stood there any longer I would be no more.

All I can remember after that is running towards the entrance of my building, completely abandoning my sleigh in the middle of the deserted street without ever looking back. I was afraid that if I did so, I would see that monstrous thing again. I went up into the apartment and locked myself in, shutting my window in fear of having its glowing eyes looking inside my bedroom.

I prayed all night, asking any deity that would listen to me to refrain that thing from tearing down the building in search of me. My parents never even realized I had come in since they were too engrossed in their heated argument. I didn’t sleep that night, nor did I the next few, at least not until I practically passed out from exhaustion.

Luckily enough, I never encountered something like that after that one dreadful evening. I never told anyone about it either, until now. It could have been all a dream, or maybe the nightmarish event didn’t repeat itself because I have just refused to walk around the city at night in fear of seeing that black skeleton ever again.

______      ______      ______

Lonely Road | Camino solitario

I once heard a quote that went like this: “The one who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The one who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever been before”, and it got me thinking for a while.

It started pretty basically, by just pondering about some stuff in my life. But then it got deeper, till the point where I would find myself following that kind of philosophy while doing the most mundane things. In the beginning, it just affected minor choices, like the type of coffee I ordered before going to work, and by the time I realized what I was doing, it had taken over most of my life.

And then I realized how basic I was, how much I let myself be influenced by everyone else. However, I finally understood the more profound meaning behind it after a few months of mulling over the same thought about going against the current. Only then did I make the definite choice to change the course of my life for the better.

I traded most of the typical things about me and what I did for things more unique and interesting. Got a new job, found new hobbies, began reading “odd” books; all concerning my mission to evolve into a greater person. I wanted so much to be there, where no one had been before, just like the quote professed.

Surprisingly enough, it worked! I got a more fulfilling job, I adopted a pet and even found love. I was doing better than ever, but there was still something bothering me about it; something was missing. And that’s when I decided to take it a step further.

The goal was simple enough, I would turn the “lonely path” approach from something figurative more into a literal thing. It consisted of walking physical paths, not just spiritual ones. So, I started taking trips across different places and lands. Forests, mountains, jungles; wherever I could go, I went and followed a new path instead of following the same everyone did.

It was certainly dangerous, and I have to admit that a couple of times I came close to meeting my maker, but the feeling of finding unexplored places was so rewarding that it became addicting. Until I came across something that I wish I have never even found.

I was in the middle of a dense jungle, in a country I dare not name in the hopes that no one else finds what I did when I stumbled upon some unknown ancient ruins. At least I think they haven’t been yet discovered since I tried to do some research about it before burying the subject for good and came up with nothing regarding the topic.

I was really excited at the time, believing I had just uncovered a hidden civilization and that I was going to be famous for it, recognized among scientists and researchers alike or whatever. Little did I know that I was making a big mistake and getting myself into something I knew nothing about.

The things I witnessed inside the decaying buildings, I cannot retell out of fear of inducing mass panic among the population. If someone else finds out about and goes public with it, it could mean the end for all of us. This is an extremely delicate and dangerous matter, not to be taken lightly in the least.

The people there, the ones that remained after what must have been decades in the least, decrepit and decadent as they were...and the things they were worshiping like gods...I cannot say it. Just thinking about it gives me chills.

I will take the secret to my grave and never speak again about that incident. The last thing we need is to give those people a reason to wake their masters sooner than planned. Just know one thing, whoever is reading my journal; they will come, and when they do

Cognitive Dissonance | Disonancia cognitiva

I think core beliefs are a thing for everyone. We all have, in varying levels of importance, something we strongly believe in. Whatever that might be, it’s always part of our motives and strength to keep moving on in this world.

Take for example those who believe in deities, or extraterrestrial life. Or just people that are sure that life has a purpose, or the universe, or just ourselves; that there’s a meaning or a reason behind all existence. Religious people and atheists alike, and everyone in between, we all believe in something.

But what happens when that thing is discredited, disproved or refuted? What do we do when we find that the very same thing we held as a true and core belief turns out to be nothing more than a lie, a false reality? What can we do when our faith loses all foundation?

Well, it depends, I guess. For each person is different, because it’s something so fundamentally personal. Despite being something shared by millions, like believing in a specific god, a belief is intimate and is tied to the person’s being; to their mind, heart, and soul.

Some people take it well; they assimilate the new evidence proving their belief false and they move on with their lives. But some others aren’t that fortunate. A few have their beliefs so integrated into their reality and life that the very disproving of those basically shatters their whole world and leaves it crumbling in pieces.

Whatever it may be, say finding out there is a god or that there’s none, can be so existentially challenging that it’ll make someone go insane, completely incapable of accepting the truth.

I wonder sometimes if something like that could ever happen to me. Like discovering there’s a higher being who created the universe, or that we all actually live in a simulation and aren’t truly alive. Or even something so bizarre as actually being someone else’s creation, as a fictional character. Could you imagine that? If that was the truth, I would surely go insane just from knowing alone.

Call of the Void | Llamada del abismo

Have you ever felt it? “The Call of the Void”. A gripping sensation of imminent doom that settles inside your soul. It’s irrational and frightening, but I guess everyone feels it at least once in their life, out of curiosity.

It’s said that The Call is a particular feeling that takes a hold of oneself when you think about sudden suicide, like considering jumping off a tall building when you are staring down the edge of its rooftop.

It’s only there, in your mind, for a split second and then it’s gone because you would never actually do something like that. You are not suicidal, just intrigued about what it would be like to actually do it, what it would feel like.

There’s no real reason behind it, it’s the “what if” present in the back of your head. Cause you have no reason, but you just can’t help but wonder what would happen if you answered The Call in that split second that you feel it.

It did make me wonder if there had been anyone that had done it, even if as a mistake. Or, in reality, how many people had gone through with it, without wanting to or understanding why, and yet we thought about it as a suicide with a reason behind it, whatever it might have been.

I also wondered if that would have been what my family and my friends would have thought of if I did it. It doesn’t take much after all; a step into nothingness to fall from a building or steering your car into oncoming traffic on the highway.

That’s at least all it took for me, you know? Just one split second of asking myself what if I did it...and then I was answering The Call without even knowing.

¿Alguna vez la has sentido?
